PTA Arts Enrichment Programs
2008/2009

Every year the PTA Arts Enrichment Committee brings eight diverse shows to Cider Mill School.  Each grade level gets two innovative shows that relate to their curriculum and the entire student body is brought together for two high-energy school wide shows geared to foster a sense of community and fun.  To date we have booked 6 of the 8 shows for the 2008/09 school year.  Here is a sampling of the great performances we have lined up for your kids!

 Ball in the House

Tuesday September 9

~ School Wide Show ~

This engaging a cappella group has released five cd's and  opened for/performed with acts such as Cher, 98¡, Jessica Simpson, Blondie, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, to name just a few.  Their unique blend of vocals is a sound unlike anything you've heard before!

"Ball in the House has everything you would expect to find in a successful pop/rock band...

the one thing it doesn't have is instruments."                              ~ The Boston Globe ~

 The Ultimate Brain Challenge

Friday, October 17

 ~ Grade Five ~

Back by popular demand!  Brain Challenge is a simulated, "live" TV game show complete with show host, referee, chase lighting, electronic scoring, background music, lockout opponent buzzer systems, microphones, countdown clock and a team building physical challenge round.  The show is a combination of age appropriate "Jeopardy", "College Bowl" and "Beat the Clock."  All the students (and teachers too!) will actually play the game during the 50 minute fast-paced, interactive show.

 Clint "Rides His Horse" Chartier

Monday, October 27

~ Grade Three ~

Another favorite at Cider Mill!  Clint Chartier has roots in both the MicMac and Mohawk tribes.  He is a compelling storyteller who transports children back to the times of the Plains Indians.  His riveting presentation is brought to life through an array of authentic artifacts including buffalo hides, hide paintings, handcrafted tools, lances, war shields and many other objects used by the Plains Indians on a daily basis.

Clint delivers his lectures dressed

in traditional handmade buckskin clothing.  He encourages children to participate by asking questions

and assisting him with demonstrations.

The Road To Freedom

Wednesday, January 14

 ~ Grade 5 ~

Students get an opportunity to join Dr. Martin Luther King on The Road to Freedom. From his first encounter with racism to his immortal speech delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. King walks students through the experience of the civil rights movement. They make discoveries with Dr. King as he encounters the teachings of some of the great historical figures who fought for freedom before him: Henry David Thoreau, who introduced him to the concept of civil disobedience, and Mahatma Gandhi, who showed him that nonviolent resistance was the most powerful weapon in the fight for equality.

Incorporating the spiritual music that became the underscore of the movement,

The Road to Freedom helps young people recognize that they can change their world peacefully.

 Bash the Trash Environmental Arts

Wednesday, April 1

~ Grade Four ~

Bash the Trash builds and performs on instruments made from recycled and reused materials.  Each interactive performance is a journey into sound, science and music - how instruments are made, why they work, and how to make your own. And of course we highlight environmental issues and how each of us can help fight global warming.

Bash the Trash teaches children how to be conscientious stewards of our world.

 Caryn Lin "Bach2Rock"

Date T.B.A.

 ~ Grade Three ~

Caryn puts on a live show that is truly unique. She plays her 4, 5, and 6 string electric violins and uses a jam man to make short on-the-spot recordings of her voice, percussion instruments, and other sounds. As she plays the violin, the recorded snippets play back in a continuous loop adding layer upon layer of sound over deceptively simple melodies. The result is music that is both otherworldly and totally catchy.

"Unlike the music defined by geography and politics or the sound corralled

by pure genre, Lin's only limits are those of her electric violin."

~ New York Post ~

Caryn has played everywhere form Lincoln Center to Six Flags, the Kimmel center, to the Crayola Crayon Factory, to the 800th anniversary of a Monastery in the French Alps. Her music has been featured on MTV's the Real World and on 150 radio stations across the county, and she (and her music) appeared in the movie "Philadelphia." she has just released her fifth studio album - "the call".

Caryn started violin lessons at age 9
